Recently I was having some fun with Tier List Maker and saw people had made a few for Balto characters spanning all three movies. I also noticed that no one had made a list to rank all three movies, so I decided to remedy that problem myself. (More on that later.)

First, I put my own spin on the existing trilogy character list.

A picture from Tier Maker, listing all of the Balto characters from all three movies. The ranks go from S to D. Balto, the white wolf, Jenna, Steele, Borus, Star, Kaltag, Nikki, Stella, Muk and Luk make S rank. This is all that matters.

As you can see, almost every main character from Balto makes the S tier. Stella from Balto III: Wings of Change also makes S tier because she’s just a fabulously controversial character in her own right. You either love her appearance or question why she’s in a children’s movie. There is no in between. I offer no other explanations for my other decisions other than “gut” feeling.

As for ranking the Balto films themselves, I found I had to create my own tier list. Granted, there are only three movies so this was an easy list to create.

A ranking of the Balto movies using Tier Maker. The first movie is ranked S, the third movie is ranked B, and the second movie is ranked F.

The original movie remains my absolute favorite to this day, so giving it an S rank was a no-brainer. I immensely dislike Balto II: Wolf Quest, so giving it an F was an easy decision for me. Of this short list, the third movie was the trickiest. I didn’t love it like the original, but I enjoyed it so much more than Wolf Quest. I decided on a solid B. It wasn’t nearly as good as Balto in terms of quality and reminded me of a Saturday morning cartoon when they used to be a thing. Wings of Change also corrected a lot of the animation mistakes that Wolf Quest made.

There you have it. If you disagree with my ranking, you can always mess around with the list I created and rank the movies yourself. If you do, please leave a comment– this also includes your take on the character tier list.

On another note, I was recently asked if there was any chance of The Icy Boards returning now that I’ve started to rebuild The Ice Cave. My answer to the person who asked was a “no.” I don’t care to create forums again. While the creation itself wouldn’t be difficult, I do not have the time or energy to maintain a message board. Spam and hacking would be very real concerns. At the moment, I’m still running (with help) The Balto League Discord server. This server was originally a replacement for The Balto League Yahoo! Groups, but also doubles a place for previous members of TIB to chat as well. I see no reason to split the community with yet another board. Also, there is a real lesson to be learned about spreading yourself thin with too many projects. Animation Source is a great example of that. (Hopefully that website returns to functionality soon.)

Work slowly continues behind the scenes of this website, but I hope to create more short and interesting blog posts to keep things lively.
